The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research that incorporates rainfall and runoff into assessments of coastal flood risk in highly urbanized areas. Most present and future risk assessments typically do not include these effects. Climate change is leading to both increasing rainfall intensity and rising coastal floods, worsening these biases and the dangers they represent. Additionally, there are communities of lower-income that are typically disproportionally impacted by these events. Prediction of these events requires a working knowledge of the complex drainage and urbanized areas and applications of both data driven and numerical modeling approaches. We seek a partner for research to investigate coupled rainfall and coastal surge flooding in highly urbanized areas, with focus on impacts to lower income and minority communities.
