The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research in advancing a coupled ocean and wave modeling system for predicting impacts from extreme events such as hurricanes. Hurricanes are a devastating destructive force that cause severe impacts in coastal areas and adjacent inland portions of their impact zone. Predictions of these events require the simulation of ocean currents and water levels, as well as simulations of wave generation, shoaling, and dissipation in the coastal zone. It has been shown that the combined effects of currents on waves and of waves on currents is necessary to increase the accuracy of these extreme event forecasts. Seek a partner for research to develop a coupled ocean-wave modeling system for predictions of hurricanes along the US East coast and Gulf of Mexico.
