A module of the coursework is held at Université Côte d'Azur, Nice, France, where students are hosted for two months at the very beginning of their second year, benefitting on an agreement between the two universities.

During the following period students work on their individual research under the supervision of a member of the faculty. The Ph.D. dissertation can be focused on any of the faculty member research areas.

PhD students actively participate in the vivid research environment of the Institute of Economics, where they are involved in various ongoing research activities (seminars, workshops/conferences, research projects). The PhD Program is also part of an international network of institutions and scholars, supporting exchanges of research students and faculty.

The main areas of research of the Institute of Economics include complexity economics, the dynamics of industry and markets, innovation, technical change and economic history, data science for economics and social science.
