The Nova School of Business and Economics in Carcavelos, Portugal is opening a second round of applications for full-time PhD positions in Management, Economics & Finance. Applications deadline is June 20th, 2025.
PhD in Management
The program is a 4-year, full-time structured program providing advanced training in the fields of: Management and Organization; Marketing; Operations, Technology and Innovation Management, Strategy and Entrepreneurship.
PhD in Economics and Finance
The program is a 4-year, full-time structured program providing advanced training in the fields of Economics and Finance. The first two years are the coursework part of the program whereas the subsequent years focus on research.
Both curriculums are designed to equip students with the tools to pursue the most challenging careers. While disciplined and rigorous in training, the program is also flexible and aimed for students who wish to pursue their unique research interests. Through the Digital Data Design Institute at Nova SBE and NOVA Medical School (D^3 Institute), PhD candidates may be eligible to engage in exchange programs with D^3 at Harvard, enhancing their research experience in one of the world’s leading academic environments.
Students are usually affiliated to one of our nine Knowledge Centers. They join its community and its activities. They participate to the research seminars and can interact with top researchers.
Funding
The top applicants to the programs are automatically offered a four-year fellowship which consist of an annual tax-free stipend of € 16.800 (€ 1.400 monthly). The school renews the funding yearly, upon student's satisfactory progress. The student may apply for an additional year of funding to extend support into a fifth year. This extension is based on academic merit and intended for students aspiring to pursue a career in academic research.
The fellowship also includes an annual 90% waiver of tuition fees (€ 2.700 equivalent) and a research allowance from the second year of € 1.000 to present your research at conferences.
Requirements for PhD in Management
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree diploma in Economics, Management, Statistics, Psychology, or other related fields. Still, if you do not have previous coursework in business studies, your supervisor may require additional coursework (at Nova SBE or elsewhere). Applicants should have a good level of competence in English.
If you don’t have a Master’s degree but expect to have defended your thesis before the start of the program (usually September 1st), your application can also be considered.

Documents required
• Curriculum Vitae
• Transcript of records of undergraduate with the full list of courses and grades (also accepted in Portuguese)
• Transcript of records of graduate degrees with the full list of courses and grades. Candidates who have not yet finished their graduate program should provide a certificate of enrolment with the complete list of grades achieved to date (also accepted in Portuguese)
• Recommendations in the form of two letters of reference, which should be sent directly by referees
• Statement of Purpose. Please include the following topics:
o why you wish to pursue a PhD at NovaSBE
o what you would like to study-area(s) of interest
o who you would like to work with as supervisor(s) and why
o your career goals after the PhD
• Certificate of results for the GRE (Graduate Records of Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Results should not be older than three years. Applicants who hold, or will shortly hold, one of the following Nova SBE Master’s degrees are not required to submit GMAT/ GRE results:
o For PhD in Economics and Finance: Master’s in Economics, Master’s in Finance, International Master’s in Finance.
o For PhD in Management: Master’s in Business Analytics.
• Copy of passport or Identity Card.
Optional documents
• English language certificate. Test results should not be older than three years.
• Recognition of your foreign degrees in Portugal. This document is issued by the DGES, please see the DGES website for more information. The document can be issued only if you complete your graduate studies.
