The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support enhanced surveillance and applied research for influenza virus and other respiratory infections in humans and animals in China. This work should help to: 1) better define the global risk of novel avian, non-avian, and seasonal influenza viruses and other respiratory diseases in China; and 2) build the evidence base for the prevention and control of these diseases. The scope of research performed should include, but is not limited to: a) activities for estimating the burden and cost of illness for groups at high risk for severe disease; b) monitoring vaccine uptake and efficacy; c) promoting vaccine programs for groups at high risk for severe influenza complications; and d) conducting surveillance for detection and control of novel and seasonal influenza viruses and other respiratory pathogens. Research activities for the prevention and control of novel and seasonal influenza viruses and other respiratory pathogens and pandemic preparedness activities should be aimed at preventing and controlling the spread and transmission of these diseases within China, and potentially to other countries, including the United States. Continued monitoring, detection, and reporting of these diseases in China should advance efforts to inform global health infection control policies and prevent and control seasonal epidemic and pandemic influenza in countries around the world. This NOFO provides an opportunity to conduct research in these important areas.
