The US Geological Survey is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research in processes and conditions leading to landslide and debris-flow occurrence in the states like Arizona in the arid southwestern USA. Research Scientists at the Landslide Hazard Program (LHP) have a program goal of forecasting debris-flow hazards for areas burned by wildfire, which are at elevated risk to debris flows for after wildfire. This research will advance the ability to develop methods to rapidly map the likelihood and potential volume of debris flows across burn areas, debris flow susceptibility over time as vegetation recovers after wildfire, debris flow runout and inundation, and estimating accurate triggering rainfall thresholds that National Weather Service (NWS) uses as for issuing warnings.
