The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS, http://www.leibniz-ios.de) in Regensburg is one of the largest and longest-established institutions of its kind in Germany with a distinctly international orientation. It is an independent research facility with close links to the University of Regensburg. IOS conducts interdisciplinary research on the history as well as the economic and political development of Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

Within the framework of its Visiting Research Fellow Program, the IOS encourages applications from historians, economists and political scientists as well as scholars of cognate disciplines. The fellows are expected to conduct research relevant to the research profile of the institute. One fellowship will be awarded in connection with the Volkswagen-Foundation funded grant to strengthen Southeast European Studies in Regensburg.

The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS, http://www.leibniz-ios.de) in Regensburg is one of the largest and longest-established institutions of its kind in Germany with a distinctly international orientation. It is an independent research facility with close links to the University of Regensburg. IOS conducts interdisciplinary research on the history as well as the economic and political development of Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

The IOS carries out research in two major research fields (https://leibniz-ios.de/en/research/ios-research/research-agenda):

  • Institutionalization, De-Institutionalization, Re-Institutionalization
  • Mobility(s) and Inequality(s)

Together with the University of Regensburg, the IOS has established the Leibniz-ScienceCampus “Europe and America in the Modern World. Frictions and Transformations of Globality since the 19th Century.”

The IOS maintains a special library holding a stock of more than 340,000 media units of literature in humanities and social sciences relating to the countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe.

Together with the University of Regensburg, the institute provides an attractive research environment in a city known for its high quality of life. Regensburg has one of Germany’s largest preserved medieval cities holding the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We now invite applications for our 2023 Visiting Researcher Program. Please submit your application online until September 16, 2022, via the IOS application portal at https://leibniz-ios.de/en/institute/about-the-institute/fellowships. The application documents should include the following (all in PDF format):

  • a short research proposal in German or English (maximum three pages)
  • a detailed academic Curriculum Vitae naming two references
  • copies of no more than three academic articles (published or unpublished)
  • preferences concerning length and desired period of your stay (usually between February and November).

Please note: All applications will be deleted after six months.
