The Graduate Program in Economics is a full-time American-style program that is taught entirely in English. The program provides students with thorough theoretical and empirical training in Economics and Data Analysis. In addition, the program offers advanced optional courses in the second year. The aim of the program is to prepare students for professional careers in academia, public and private research institutions, and the corporate sector.
MASTER PROGRAM
The Master is a two-year academic program. Year one focuses on core courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics.
In Year Two, students take nine elective courses, in which students explore topics in the frontier of research, such as:
• Behavioral Economics
• Experimental Economics
• Macroeconometrics
• Advanced Econometrics and Big Data
• Labor Economics
• Development Economics
By the end of the second year, students complete their Master’s thesis under the direction of a faculty supervisor. In the thesis, students put to use the knowledge they have acquired throughout the Master, in order to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the literature in the research area they have chosen to work in, along with the ability to make a novel research contribution.
OUR STRENGTHS
- Our faculty has been trained in prestigious international and national universities.
- A small student-to-faculty ratio, implying that our students receive dedicated attention and support from our faculty.
- Expertise in a wide range of research topics: behavioral economics, macroeconomics, financial economics, applied economics (in labor, health, education and development), and data science, among others.
- The possibility of combining a rigorous and thorough training with a Mediterranean lifestyle.
PhD PROGRAM
Those students wishing to continue onto the PhD program will start working on their doctoral thesis in year three under the supervision of faculty members. PhD students will benefit from a dynamic research environment including weekly departmental seminars by leading international scholars and will also have the opportunity to present their own work at regular workshops.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
During the first year, the Department awards scholarships ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 euros to the best students admitted to the program. From the second year on, the financial support is linked to Teaching or Research Assistantships on a competitive basis and -depending on the duties- the amount provided by these fellowships ranges from 8,000 to 22,000 euros per year.
PhD PLACEMENT
The Department strongly encourages our PhD students to participate in the international job market. In particular, our Placement Office provides financial and logistic support in order to facilitate the job searches of our PhD candidates. By participating in our Placement Workshop, candidates are able to prepare for all of the important aspects of the job market process. These include communication skills, mock interviews and seminars, how to select places to target, how to fill out applications, etc. Further, the Department provides additional financial support in order to enable our PhD candidates to participate in the international Job Market Meetings that are conducted annually in Europe and the United States.
