The Department of Economics at Deakin University in Australia is excited to announce the opening of applications for the 2025 PhD program in Economics, which will commence in February 2025. Applications are due by October 6, 2024. The department offers substantial scholarships to cover tuition fees and provide a tax-exempt living stipend of $33,500 per year. Additionally, students relocating from interstate or overseas will receive a relocation allowance ranging from $500 to $1,500, depending on whether they are single or moving with family.
We are looking for intellectually curious applicants eager to join a dynamic and stimulating environment supported by world-class researchers. In the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) rankings, our department's research was rated "above world standards," placing us among the top ten in Australia and third in Victoria. Our team consists of over 30 academic staff with expertise in a wide range of economic fields, including development economics, behavioral economics, health economics, macroeconomic theory, microeconomic theory, agricultural and applied economics, and international trade.
Our doctoral program is designed to equip PhD students for successful careers in academia, industry, or government. The curriculum includes five coursework units in theory and econometrics, and students will work on their doctoral thesis under the mentorship of experts in their chosen field. Graduates of the Department of Economics at Deakin University hold prestigious positions both in Australia and internationally. Our alumni are employed by leading institutions such as the Reserve Bank of Australia, the University of Melbourne, Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre, Monash University Malaysia, DIW Berlin, Central Queensland University, City University of Macau, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the National Institute of Technology (India), Shanghai Institute of Technology (China), Paris Dauphine University (France), the Department of Treasury and Finance, VIC (Australia), Vietnam National University, and Durham University (UK).
Students enrolled in our PhD programme will have the opportunity to apply to visit Yale University for a period of 9 to 12 months, where they will be part of Professor Mobarak’s working group of PhD students. To apply, PhD students must have excelled in the first year of our program and must be working on a topic in development economics.
A completed honours or master’s degree in economics, mathematics, statistics, or cognate fields with an excellent academic record and experience in research is required.
