The Department of Economics at Deakin University, Australia is pleased to announce a call for applications for the 2024 PhD programme in Economics (starting February 2024, with application deadline of Oct 16 2023). The department offers generous scholarships to PhD students to cover tuition fees and provide a living allowance paid as stipends. Students receive a stipend of $33,500 per annum tax exempt. A relocation allowance from $500 to $1,500 (for single to family) is awarded to students who are moving from interstate or overseas.
We’re seeking applicants who are intellectually curious and want to be part of a dynamic and stimulating environment supported by world class researchers. The department’s research has been rated ``above world standards’’ by the Australian Federal Government’s Excellence in Research in Australia in 2018 (ERA 2018) and is ranked among the top ten in Australia and third in Victoria (ERA 2018). The department comprises over 30 academic staff specializing in all fields of economic research, including development economics, behavioural economics, health economics, macroeconomic theory, microeconomic theory, agricultural and applied economics, and international trade. The department is linked to several Professorial Research Fellows who further strengthen the supervisory and research capability, including Prof. Nejat Anbarci (Durham University), Prof. Marco Mariotti (Queen Mary University of London), Prof. Mushfiq Mobarak (Yale University), Prof. Jaideep Roy (University of Bath), and Prof. Utku Unver (Boston College).
Our doctoral programme is designed to prepare PhD students for successful careers in academia, industry, or government. Students complete five coursework units in theory and econometrics as part of the program and will progress to work on their doctoral thesis under the guidance of PhD supervisors who are experts in the area of their doctoral thesis. Students who earned a PhD from the Department of Economics at Deakin currently work in prestigious positions in Australia and globally. Some of our students’ employers include the Reserve Bank of Australia, University of Melbourne, Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre, Monash University Malaysia, DIW Berlin, Central Queensland University, City University of Macau, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, National Institute of Technology (India), Shanghai Institute of Technology (China), Paris Dauphine University (France), Department of Treasury and Finance, VIC (Australia), Vietnam National University, and Durham University (UK).
Students enrolled in our PhD programme will have the opportunity to apply to visit Yale University for a period of 9 to 12 months, where they will be part of Professor Mobarak’s working group of PhD students. To apply, PhD students must have excelled in the first year of our program and must be working on a topic in development economics.
