The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (www.bnitm.de) is the largest Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Germany and is the National Reference Centre for Tropical Pathogens, a WHO Collaborating Centre and member of the Leibniz Research Association.

The Health Economics Research Group (Dr. Jan Priebe) within the Department of Implementation Science at BNITM in Hamburg (Germany) is looking for a highly motivated

Postdoc (m/f/d)

– full-time, EG 13 TV-AVH –

from 1st November 2024 onwards. The position (40 h/week) is initially limited to 2 years, with the option of a 2-year extension
 

The Health Economics Research Group is dedicated to addressing and studying some of the most pressing challenges in human and health and aims to contribute to a more innovative, collaborative, and evidence-based vision of global health. With a focus on tropical countries the working group (i) looks at establishing causal impacts and mechanisms of large-scale national and global health interventions, (ii) identifies and tests innovations to improve the delivery of public interventions and health services, (iii) explores measures to improve health access for disadvantaged sub-populations such as the poor, and (iv) evaluates the cost-effectiveness of health interventions.     

The vacant position fits in the field of global health and focuses primarily on infection control and emerging infections. We welcome applications from candidates holding or being in the process of obtaining a PhD in economics and related disciplines such as geography, psychology, and statistics. 

Your profile:

  • Motivated scientist with a PhD in economics or a closely related discipline (geography, psychology, statistics)
  • Research interest in empirical health economics in developing countries with a particular focus in at least one of the following fields: behavioral economics, health economics, econometrics (experimental and non-experimental causal identification), and spatial economics 
  • Proven academic track record
  • Prior knowledge in quantitative data analysis using R and/or Stata
  • Experience in the collection of primary data is beneficial
  • Interest in cross-cultural and cross-country comparative studies and research in the countries of BNITM's African partner institutions
  • Tropical suitability and readiness for short-term research activities in Africa, Asia and Latin America
  • Very good knowledge English (both spoken and written). Additional knowledge of German is beneficial but not required

Your tasks:

  • Joint research of the working group on questions of global health, one health, and public health 
  • Design and coordination of interventions and field work activities 
  • Willingness to attract third-party funding and contribute to joint applications for research funds
  • Willingness to participate in capacity building activities 
  • Willingness to supervise PhD students and research assistants
  • Active participation in the research and policy networks related to development and health economics  
  • Taking responsibility for personnel and budget, project management and administration
