Job Description

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes the boundaries of technology to deliver innovative research tools to the global physics and engineering community. This position is within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which maintains and further develops over 40 years of expertise in the mechanical design, manufacturing, and assembly of accelerator and detector devices.

As a Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer in the Fabrication Methods and Subcontracting Section (EN-MME-FS), you will be responsible for the fabrication of complex components using a wide range of technologies, including state-of-the-art machining, forming, and welding. Manufacturing may take place either internally in one of the Group's workshops or externally through subcontracting to industry.

The role involves visits to suppliers in CERN Member States responsible for manufacturing these components, providing a unique opportunity to work closely with industrial partners and gain exposure to diverse industrial environments.

You will join a multidisciplinary team responsible for developing a wide range of equipment and components used at CERN across numerous research and development projects, with a particular focus on preparations for the next Long Shutdown (LS3), during which major upgrades to the accelerator complex will be carried out.

Your responsibilities

  • Collaborating with project stakeholders (project engineers, designers, draftsmen, etc.) and contributing to the design-for-manufacturing phase to ensure optimal fabrication solutions.
  • Review and revise 2D drawings, with particular attention to geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing, in preparation for fabrication.
  • Contributing to the definition of appropriate make-or-buy strategies to determine whether components should be produced within CERN's facilities or outsourced to industrial partners.
  • Preparing technical specifications and related documentation for invitations to tender and price enquiries.
  • Preparing fabrication schedules in coordination with relevant stakeholders and following up on internal manufacturing activities.
  • Leading preparatory activities for fabrication, such as defining and procuring suitable raw materials and preparing fabrication sequences, including QA/QC aspects.
  • Managing subcontracted production carried out by external companies.

Your profile

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting 2D drawings and 3D CAD models (ISO geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing).
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation.
  • Familiarity with precision assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
  • Experience in the use of Stainless Steels, Aluminum and Copper Alloys.
  • Experience in writing technical specifications and fabrication reports.

Skills

  • Geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (ISO GPS standard).
  • CNC machining techniques.
  • CAD/CAM tools.
  • Knowledge of pressure vessels, cryogenic devices, vacuum chambers & UHV components, mechanical structures is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of joining techniques such as welding (TIG, MIG, EBW...) brazing and soldering is considered an asset.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
