Practitioner / consultant
SY-RF-MKS-2024-205-LD
Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
Are you passionate about high-voltage engineering and eager to work on cutting-edge RF systems? Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, oversee challenging installations, and ensure safety standards in one of the most advanced scientific environments on the planet. Take part!
You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. You will be working within the Radiofrequency Group, MKS Section in charge of Modulators, Klystrons and high-gradient accelerating structures. https://sy-dep-rf.web.cern.ch/
The Section provides the RF power generation necessary to feed on the particle accelerators at CERN. We are responsible of the RF power system design and specification, procurement, installation and reliable operation for a large part of the CERN accelerators, and high-power RF test facilities. We also engage on R&D for novel power sources in collaboration with external partners.
Functions
As a member of the team, you will:
- Design and build new high-voltage systems to power high-performance klystrons;
- Oversee the troubleshooting and operation of pulsed and continuous-wave (CW) high-voltage generators (60–360 kV) for RF systems;
- Provide expert support to the operating team on high-voltage-related issues;
- Define and manage technical specifications as well as procurement documentation;
- Lead the procurement, installation, and commissioning of high-voltage systems;
- Supervise and mentor staff and students as needed, fostering a collaborative environment;
- Ensure the safety of test stands in close partnership with CERN's Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) service.
Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electrical engineering or a related field.
Experience:
Required experience with:
- Designing high voltage;
- High voltage devices and pulse power engineering;
- RF power generators;
- Operating complex RF power systems.
Desired experience with:
- Tube-based RF power sources.
Technical competencies:
- Design and modelling of high-voltage electrical circuits and networks.
- Design, construction and testing of RF power generation components and systems.
- Design and construction of pulse-forming networks and high-voltage switches.
- Design and analysis of RF systems.
- Operation and maintenance of RF components and systems.
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
- Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting; taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
- Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
- Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Communicating effectively: giving praise and providing honest and constructive feedback.
Language skills:
Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations.
