Money & Macro Media (known from the Money & Macro show on YouTube) is a dynamic video media startup producing videos exploring the intersection of economics, social science, and current global trends. Our approach is analytical and evidence-based, similar in rigor to The Economist or Financial Times, but with a distinct focus on the scientific underpinnings of social and economic phenomena. We aim to make complex ideas accessible and engaging for a thoughtful audience as we build a team that’s passionate about figuring out the global economy.

The Role:

We are seeking a talented and insightful Economist or Research Analyst to join our core team in a permanent position. This is a hybrid role based out of our office in Antwerp (Belgium), requiring a minimum of two days per week in the office to foster collaboration and creativity.

You will be central to developing our analytical voice and content offerings. Your primary responsibility will be producing high-quality economic analyses, which form the foundation for our video scripts. However, your expertise will also be crucial in expanding our reach through contributing to the development of masterclasses, online courses, and potentially participating in related consulting projects.

This is a unique opportunity to be engaged with economic science that is directly applied to what is going on right now. But, unlike in academia, you’ll be able to cover a much wider range of topics. On top of that, you can significantly shape the analytical direction of a small growing media company and develop your own profile as an expert communicator.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently research and analyze current economic events, trends, and relevant social science research.
  • Develop and pitch relevant topics aligned with our content strategy.
  • Write well-structured, evidence-based analytical articles suitable for a well-informed but non-specialist audience.
  • Ensure rigorous argumentation, factual accuracy, and appropriate sourcing.
  • Contribute analytical expertise to the development and creation of educational content, including masterclasses and online courses.
  • Potentially support or lead analysis for related consulting engagements.
  • Collaborate closely with the production team and host, Joeri Schasfoort, in our hybrid environment.
  • Meet agreed-upon deadlines consistently.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred: PhD in Economics or a closely related social science field (e.g., Political Economy, Sociology, International Relations, Public Policy) with a strong analytical foundation. Candidates nearing PhD completion with relevant writing experience will also be considered.
  • Alternatively: Master's degree in a relevant field combined with significant professional experience in economic analysis, research, policy, or financial journalism, OR exceptional candidates with demonstrable experience producing high-quality, long-form analytical writing in the relevant subject area.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research, analyze data, and synthesize information from diverse sources (academic literature, reports, data sets).
  • Exceptional English writing skills, with a talent for explaining complex topics clearly and engagingly.
  • Strong understanding of contemporary economic issues. Familiarity with social science research methodologies is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team structure.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to adhere to deadlines.
  • A keen interest in communicating economic and social science insights to a broader audience.
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite in Antwerp at least 2 days per week.
  • (Bonus) Experience in curriculum development, teaching, consulting, or presenting complex information.

What We Offer:

  • A permanent position as a key member of a growing media startup with a unique analytical voice.
  • Direct mentorship from our host, Joeri Schasfoort, who is personally committed to helping you develop into an incredible applied researcher.
  • A competitive salary package commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • A hybrid working model combining collaborative office days (minimum 2 per week) with remote flexibility.
  • The opportunity to shape content strategy and expand into diverse formats like courses and consulting.
  • A community to build your profile and share your expertise with an engaged audience.
  • A collaborative and intellectually stimulating team environment.

How to Apply:

If you are passionate about rigorous economic analysis, clear communication, and are excited by the prospect of working in a hybrid team environment, we encourage you to apply. Please send the following to safia@moneymacro.net:

  • Your CV.
  • A Cover Letter: Briefly explain why you are interested in this role and how your background aligns with our needs. Highlight your specific areas of economic/social science expertise and confirm your ability to work in a hybrid model based in Antwerp.
  • Two Writing Samples: Please provide samples that best demonstrate your analytical capabilities and writing style, ideally on economic or social science topics aimed at an intelligent, general audience. This could include research papers, blogs, newspaper letters, or (if you have none of this) a single opinion letter about a subject that is currently in the news and related to your area of expertise (e.g. similar to a letter sent in to a newspaper).

Please use the subject line: "Application: Economist/Research Analyst (Hybrid) - [Your Name]".

We look forward to reviewing your application!
