Job Description
At the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, we handle several aspects of the offline preparation of the data for physics analysis.
You will be part of the CMS Physics Performance and Dataset (PPD) group.
You will manage all programming and infrastructure support of the CMS databases related to online and offline conditions, data handling and processing related to alignment and calibration. You will interact strongly with physicists in the Alignment, Calibration and Database (AlCa-DB) team, which coordinates the detector and physics object groups for the preparation and deployment of the alignment and calibration conditions.
In order to provide the best service, you will work in close collaboration with the CERN IT DBAs to ensure the stability of the services and coordinate scheduled updates and other maintenance tasks.
You will provide and maintain tools for the users to efficiently handle the conditions and calibration data in the database (O2O, Dropbox, GlobalTag, etc.) and the distribution of the conditions to the world-wide grid computing farms through the Frontier system. In addition, expertise and guidance is given to handle new use-cases.
Qualifications
Eligibility criteria
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
- You have a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or other related field;
- You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.
Essential skills and experience
- Excellent knowledge of database and database handling in general. Specifically ORACLE DB which is used as the main DB, and DB handling tools, such as SQL, sqlalchemy;
- Excellent programming skills with proficiency in both Python and C++.
Desired skills and experience
- Expert-level knowledge of the techniques used to manage software releases and testing procedures;
- Expert-level knowledge of the database query language (SQL) and Object Relational Mapper (sqlalchemy);
- Good knowledge of modern web frameworks (CherryPy, Flask) and technologies (jQuery, AJAX).

In return, CERN will provide you with:
- An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months;
- A stipend ranging from 5,321 to 6,606 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
- Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
- Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
- 2.5 days of paid leave per month
