Job Description

Are you interested in radiation transport studies and exciting new particle colliders? Then join the International Muon Collider Collaboration (https://muoncollider.web.cern.ch/)!

All the work will be carried out in the scope of the EU-cofinanced MuColl study. Join the CERN FLUKA and radiation protection teams for this exciting new project!

You will:

  • Perform Monte Carlo particle transport simulations with the FLUKA code (https://fluka.cern/), studying the showers induced by neutrinos;
  • Contribute to the quantitative assessment of mitigation measures, such as movable magnet configurations;
  • Carry out radiation load studies for the target area, where the muon beams are produced;
  • Contribute to the shielding design by means of FLUKA studies.

Qualifications

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
  • You have a Master’s degree and between 2 and 6 years’ experience or PhD with up to 3 years of relevant experience in applied physics or radiation physics studies or other related field;
  • You should have a working knowledge of English or French.

Skills and/or knowledge:

  • Simulation of radiation environments;
  • Knowledge of particle-matter interactions;
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages;
  • Knowledge of at least one Monte Carlo code (FLUKA, Geant4, etc.) is an asset.

Additional Information

What we offer: 

  • An employment contract of in principle 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months;
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6050 and 6650 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract;
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
