Our Economics MSc comprehensively covers the core areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. As well as acquiring excellent technical training in these areas, you’ll also learn how to bring your analytical strengths to bear on applied issues. This course includes training in research methodology that will give you the skills you need to carry out independent research in economics and complete your dissertation.
We offer a range of elective modules which will allow you to tailor your course to meet your needs. These modules take in the full range of academic expertise and active research interests within the School of Economics.
In addition to our standard MSc Economics we offer four pathways and flexibility is built into the programmes giving you the option to switch across to different pathways:
• Economics (Econometrics and Big Data) MSc
• Economics (International Economics) MSc
• Economics (Macroeconomics and Financial Markets) MSc
• Economics (Policy Evaluation and Data Analysis) MSc
We teach the core MSc Economics programme in the first semester and then, if you wish, you can switch to one of our specialist Economics masters pathways or continue on the standard MSc Economics.
Surrey’s Economics MSc is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) for the purpose of exemption from some professional examinations through the accredited degree accelerated route.
The aim of the programme
The programme will help you build on your undergraduate studies to develop advanced capabilities and skills relevant for the modern world. Deepening your knowledge in this field will equip you with the tools to pursue a range careers with a need for advanced economics analysis.
The structure of the programme
For our first semester, we’ve introduced the new module Advanced Quantitative Methods in Economics in addition to the existing modules (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics 1). We’ve also developed several new modules for the second semester, such as Central Banking and Monetary Economics, Policy Evaluation and Data Analysis, Machine Learning and Methods and Big Data, Theory and Applications in Finance.

We’re also adding to our friendly academic team, recruiting new specialist staff to expand our teaching portfolio and to support and guide you in your postgraduate studies. The School’s growth follows our success in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey 2022, our student satisfaction rate was 87% and the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) in which we broke into the top-10 in the UK.
