Welcome to 2018! It's the perfect time to start making your New Year's resolutions and see what you want to learn, change or improve this year. Get inspired by our list of 10 goals for college students. We hope it will help you make 2018 even more successful than the previous year!
1. I will study a new subject by taking a class in a different field or by reading up on it.
College isn't just about learning your degree subject – it's also about broadening your horizons and gaining new interests and areas of expertise. So try out a subject you haven't studied before, by taking a class in it or by researching into the topic on your own time.
2. I will listen to others in class and speak only when invited to do so.
It's important to listen to other people in class, as you can learn as much from your fellow students as from your lecturers. Don't raise your voice in class or talk over other people – try to really listen to them and you'll learn more.
3. I will master a skill which I am struggling with – whether it's statistical analysis, essay writing, or oral presentation.
Every student has that one area where they feel weak and unsure. Face your fears head on and work on your skills so that you can feel more confident in future.
4. I will attend a social event where I don't know anyone and talk to at least one new person.
Socialising is a big part of the college experience, but it can be intimidating! The good news is that everyone else at college feels the same way. Attend events and talk to new people and you'll make new friends and improve your confidence.
5. I will see what sports facilities are available at my college and whether there is a team or class I'd like to join.
Colleges often have an incredible range of sporting facilities which are more varied than anything you'll find once you leave. So have a look and see if there's a sport which appeals to you, even if you're not usually the sporty type. As well as the traditional college team sports, you might find classes for martial arts, dance, target sports like archery, or water sports like windsurfing.
6. I will attend an art exhibition, live music concert, or poetry reading event on campus.
There are sure to be a ton of artistic events on at your college, and they're usually free or very cheap to attend. Have a look around an exhibition or go to a reading, and you might just discover a new passion for photography or poetry.
7. I will practise saying “I don't know” and “I don't understand” and accept that I can't know everything.
Lots of college students feel like they're expected to know everything and to have all the answers. You might feel embarrassed to admit that there's something they don't know or don't understand. But in fact, this is the only way you can learn! Forgive yourself for not knowing everything and ask for help or clarification when you need it, and you'll learn much more and feel a lot better too.
8. I will plan out my assignments and exam revision so that I'm not stressed out by them.
The earlier you start your assignments, the less stressful they'll be – so do yourself a favour and begin work on your essays or revision with plenty of time so you don't end up rushing them and feeling overwhelmed.
9. I will ask for help from my lecturers when I need it.
If there's an assignment you don't know how to approach, or a topic which was covered in your lectures that you just don't understand, that's okay! Let your lecturer know that you're having problems and they can give you support and advice to get you back on track.
10. I will get enough sleep, drink enough water, and eat some vegetables once in a while.
Yeah, we know that you're busy and you've got lots to do and that you want to go out and have fun, but you need to look after yourself too! Don't push yourself too hard, and try to make room for 8 hours of sleep a night and some healthy food on occasion – you'll feel much better for it.
