Job Description

Your responsibilities

Are you a passionate Mechanical Engineer with a deep understanding of complex systems engineering, and with an appetite for challenging problems? Would you like to help the ATLAS Technical Coordination team design and build a unique particle physics detector by playing a key role in mechanical design? Make use of your skills to meet the demanding performance and efficiency requirements of one of the largest particle-physics experiments in the world.

You will join:

  • The Experimental Physics (EP) Department which encompasses the experimental particle physics activities in the Organization;
  • The Project Office (PO) Section of the ATLAS Detector Operation (ADO) Group, which is in charge of operating, maintaining, and upgrading the Detector of the ATLAS experiment and the associated infrastructure.

As Mechanical engineer, you will:

  • Be in charge of the design and integration process for new service-flexible chains. Interact with suppliers and prepare technical specification and procurement documents as well as detailed installation procedures.
  • Actively participate in organizing the flexible chain CAD models correctly within the PLM system. Create simplified and configurable CAD models to describe the new opening configuration and opening procedure
  • Participate in the design of installation tooling, support structures or integration studies for the various upgrade projects of the ATLAS Phase 2 program.
  • Collaborate with other members of the ATLAS Project Office to
    • Manage integration and define envelope
    • Participate in the collective effort on safety and operations (safety shifts, patrols, or other services)
    • Regularly present the progress of the design.

Required Experience

  • Experience in mechanical design and integration within an engineering environment, along with strong knowledge of relevant software (e.g. CATIA / PLM / Smarteam).
  • Experience with FEA calculation of mechanical structure both in static and in dynamic.
  • Some experience in writing technical documentations, calculation notes and technical specifications.

Your profile

Qualification: Master's degree in the field of mechanical engineering, or equivalent

Technical Competencies

  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures
  • Integration of mechanical systems
  • Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics
  • Knowledge of design codes and compliance verification of mechanical equipment
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models

Behavioral Competencies

  • Achieving results: Deliver prompt and efficient service taking into account customer needs.
  • Demonstrating accountability: present information accurately and objectively; take responsibility for own actions and decisions.
  • Working in teams: effective collaboration within multi-disciplinary and international teams.
  • Solving Problems: Address complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components.; be open to original ideas and creative options by which to address issues.

Language Requirements: Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Industrial or mechanical engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 10 December at 23:59 CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-February-2025

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.

  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
