Job Description

Your responsibilities

Join the SY department at CERN, responsible for accelerator beam-related technical systems, to contribute to the consolidation and upgrade of RF systems in the Proton Synchrotron (PS). This role involves studying and developing scenarios for replacing smaller tube amplifiers with solid-state systems, upgrading various frequency systems, and enhancing the ion program. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in critical upgrades that will shape the future of CERN's RF systems.

For this purpose you will:

  • Be in collaboration with CERN staff, conduct a study on the consolidation and upgrade scenarios for the PS RF systems.
  • Based on a proven approach, develop models for the RF systems which are required for the transition from RF tube to solid-state technology.
  • Assess current system limitations, margins for improvement, and identify key challenges in the transition to solid-state technology.
  • Evaluate the need and potential options for cavity upgrades e.g. using Finemet cavities.
  • Initiate a study on a potential upgrade to the ion program, requiring one or more cavities capable of covering the 10 to 20 MHz frequency range.

Your profile

Skills

  • Knowledge of Electromagnetic theory and Accelerator physics
  • Radio Frequency measurements
  • Experience in modelling power RF amplifiers and resonating cavities
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools
  • Experience in beam-cavity interaction
  • Experience with Python
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Applied physicist / Electronics Engineer (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 2d of February 2025 at 23:59 (midnight) CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-April-2025

This position involves:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Exposure to ionizing radiation and classified as category A.
  • Operations on electrical installations or in their vicinity (over 1000 Volt AC or 1500 Volt DC) requiring a specific authorization.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

We are on a Quest. A Journey into discovery like no other. Bring your expertise to our unique work and develop your knowledge and skills at pace. Join world-class subject matter experts on unique projects, in a Quest for greater knowledge and deeper understanding.
