AMSE Summer School: “Social Mobility and Inequalities”

Is climbing the socioeconomic ladder possible? This question has frequently been examined by economists. However, first economic analysis used to measure social mobility in terms of income, whereas the concept is far more complex and multidimensional. Indeed, some evidence show that people may achieve a higher income than their parents or before, but heading down the social ladder. New economic research now adopts a larger scope than encompasses inherited inequalities, unequal opportunities or employment polarization to better understand how social mobility is affected, but also how this concept may be measured using innovative theoretical and empirical approaches.

During the three days of the Summer School, students will get rigorous and in-depth exposure to the most recent theories and empirical methods applied to examine social mobility (intergenerational, income, upward mobility...) and inequalities.

Lectures will be given by leading experts in the field:

• Francisco H. G. Ferreira (London School of Economics),
• Cecilia Garcia Peñalosa (CNRS, EHESS, AMSE),
• Emmanuel Flachaire (Aix-Marseille Université, AMSE).

This year’s summer school should be of interest to graduate students or academics who want to expand their knowledge in this thriving area of research and to practitioners who want to familiarize themselves with the measurement of social mobility and inequalities. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research in a workshop during the summer school.
